If people want rock bands etc. in church they can go to one of those stupid jumbo nothing nondenominational protestant megachurches. There is no place for that filth in Anglicanism or Catholicism.

Oh, and royalcello, has modernistic liturgical bilge seriously afflicted the Stephansdom!? Oh, how the glorious churches are desecrated....

Seriously. I couldn't believe I was hearing that garbage there, of all places.

To be fair, they still have real music on Sunday mornings. But I was there on a Saturday evening. (Unfortunately my orchestra, being on tour, left early the next morning so there was no possibility of going to a proper Viennese mass.)

My Facebook comments on the "beatification" of Paul VI:

Whatever. It's impossible to take the regime in Rome at all seriously anymore; it's no more coherent than Canterbury, which at least does not insist that every recent Archbishop be considered a "saint." If the pope under whom every aspect of Catholic life changed dramatically for the worse is a "blessed," it's hard to see what anyone who is not a mass murderer could do to merit _not_ being one.

And here's proof:

This is somewhat relevant to church matters as well. And in general leftists' and feminists' hysteria over sexual abuse apparently ignores the fact women and children have also committed it, with very little attention given to it.

The Vatican has defrocked three Cincinnati area priests over improper behavior with minors.

Pope Francis has described his predicessor Benedict XVI as a "great pope" amid continuing fallout from the recent synod where a chasm has opened between different wings of the church hierarchy.

Perhaps new ground can be broken, and Benedict XVI canonised or at least beatified before he dies. It would give him a chance to enjoy the even more elevated status which is surely coming his way.

Sainthood for Popes is fast becoming or has become the Papal version of what a "Life Peerage" is to a former UK Prime Minister or "Senator for Life" is to the Italian "President*" somewhat cheapens the post every time.

* I am so resisting calling that office "Chief Usurper".

No need to resist! Presidents deserve scorn as far as this forum is concerned.

Well, Popes have been proclaimed to be Saints very often in the past either way.

Well it depends on what you mean by "very often".  Of a list of 265 Popes of the Roman Catholic Church, only 81 have been canonized.  52 of the first 54 Popes are regarded as saints, which then leaves 29 sainted Popes for all the centuries since.  Of these 29 canonized popes, two are popes that reigned after World War II (John XXIII, John Paul II).

Three more popes have advanced to various levels on the way to sainthood, (recently Beatified Paul VI, Venerable Pius XII and Servant of God and John Paul I).  If these last three are eventually canonized, then all but the two currently living popes who have reigned since World War II have been saints.  I think that is the longest continual line of saintly popes since those first 52.  As to the two who are still alive, one prominent (admittedly non-Roman Catholic entertainer Elton John) voice has called for one of them (Pope Francis) to be proclaimed a saint right now while he still lives. [eek]   So "very often" is a rather recent phenomenon.

Blessed Pope Pius IX, of Syllabus Errorum fame, was beatified at the same time as St John XXIII, but he has advanced no farther.
