That isn't an argument. Slogans and appeals to popularity or historic trends are not arguments, or sound or cogent ones at least.

Well back to the subject of this thread from the never ending "culture wars" ...

Pope Francis is standing by the appointment of a Chilean Bishop who has been criticized as helping to cover up sex abuse cases.

Pope Francis mentioned the fact that tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of the death of St. Pope John Paul II.

I love St John Paul the Great (one of the few things with which I disagree with Theodore on). I understand that he wasn't exactly ideal liturgically, but as a Pope he was successful in spreading the Good News across the world, and his contribution to the end of Communism was invaluable.

With the visiting Oriental Ortodox Catholicos of all Armenians present, Pope Francis held services to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, and refered to it as a genocide.  This is the first time a Pope has publicly aknowledged that the killings ammounted to a genocide.

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/religion/pope-francis-calls-slaughter-of-armenians-a-genocide-sparking-feud-between-turkey-and-vatican

The President of Turkey has condemned the Pope for his statement and warned him not to repeat this "mistake".

This is one of the few times that Humble Frank has said or done anything that I agree with!

Pope Francis has dismissed Gerhard Cardinal Mueller as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.  The conservative Cardinal has been widely regarded as having opposed many of the Pope's liberalizing moves, especially towards divorced Catholics.

He is being replaced by his deputy, Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, who like the Pope is a Jesuit and a person described as "meek" and unlikely to challenge the Pope on doctrine and policy unlike Cardinal Mueller.

Ah well, it was to be expected. Francis is a Jesuit, they are practitioners of Liberation Theology, and they have ever interfered in politics. Unlike the credulous Templars, they are experts at dissembling and surreptitiously advancing their hidden agendas. The newly-appointed prefect is also a Jesuit, and perhaps they are slyly seeking redress for Dominus ac Redemptor in 1773.

In a further blow to the conservative camp in the Vatican, a rather scandalous incident could well cost Cardinal Coccopalmiero his position by forcing him into retirement.  Police have evidently broken up a drug-fuled gay orgy being held at the apartment of Monsignor Luigi Cappozzi, secretary and leading aide to Cardinal Coccopalmiero (often referred to as Cardinal Cocco).  The apartment where this orgy was being held belongs to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (indeed it is located in the former Palace of the Holy Office), and so Pope Francis was informed and is apparently livid.  Interestingly enough, while there is no law against gay sex in Vatican City, there are laws about consuming drugs, so Monsignor Cappozzi was taken in (apparently in an intoxicated state) and was charged when he sobered up.  He has since been whisked off to a spiritual retreat.  CArdinal Coccopalmiero had been pushing for Monsignor Cappozzi to be made a bishop, but this seems to have ended those prospects, especially since the Monsignor has apparently been in trouble for drugs on two previous occasions.  Speculation is that the Pope will ask Cardinal Coccopalmiero to retire over this scandal.  The Cardinal holds several important Vatican posts, including heading the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts.  This comes right after Vatican Finance head, Cardinal Pell, has been forced to take a leave of absence to go defend himself in his native Australia against criminal sexual abuse charges.

Some are interpreting Pope Benedict's words at Cardinal Meisner's funeral as a covert criticism of the Roman Church under his successor:
