Spain looks set to invoke Article 155 of the Constitution, suspending the Catalan government as UDI remains a possibility:

Like Ireland in 1916, the Catalan rebels are violating the rules of a democratic state. Therefore they should be paid no heed, and all must be loyal to the Crown.

It's official: the government of Spain will impose direct rule on Catalonia and call fresh elections, as they can under the constitution.

What we see here from media coverage of the Catalonia crisis is an attempt to put Spain in a bad light. It is a dangerous game to play. This isn't the former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia which was basically an enslavement of peoples and nations. Spain is a radically different proposition because of its historical evolution which was not conquest or enslavement of other European nations. The people of Catalonia accepted the constitution in 1978 and they are bound to obey it.

Re the second link, I've read BBC coverage of the crisis almost every day and I would say they've been pretty even-handed; more so than most news organs, in fact, the general tendency having been to reflexively condemn 'repression' of 'democracy' without giving a moment's thought to the actual issues involved. And the presenter's remark seems perfectly reasonable to me. Mind you, an as reasonable reply would have been 'But what about the probably larger chunk of Catalan voters that are against separation? They're not going to go away either.'

I think this will all end in tears for the Catalans very shortly as they will find that precious few actually want them after they have burned their bridges in this fashion.

I'm happy to see so many loyal Catalans supporting Spain! I had started to hope their government wouldn't continue with declaring independence since they had delayed it for so many weeks, but alas it was not to be. We'll see how this continues, but I think Spain will win in the end, one way or another.

The whole affair is looking increasingly like a soap opera, with the leaders of the Catalan government now having fled to Belgium and Belgian politicians already fighting each other over the question if they should be granted asylum. What a ridiculous idea that would be - it shows exactly what the Flemish separatists are worth!

Puigdemont has now been summonsed to testify by a Spanish court. Even though he has not yet been charged, presumably if he ignores the summons he will become a fugitive and subject to extradition. Then things could get very messy; despite Puigdemont's protestations that he is in Belgium only because Brussels hosts key European institutions the EU has no jurisdiction over such questions, which are a matter for Belgium alone. And of course the Flemings are sympathetic to their fellow separatist, the Walloons not so. It would be naïve to think that exploiting and widening the fault lines in Belgian society to serve his own interests is not at least a thought in the back of the former Catalan president's mind.

Me, I hope he and his cronies are charged and serve jail time. People should learn that playing with politics the way he and others of his ilk have is a lot like playing with fire. At least, it is if you do it while paying no regard whatever to the applicable laws.
