Yahya Jammeh seized power in a coup in The Gambia in 1994, overthrowing the democratically-elected President Sir Dawda Jawara. Jammeh established a dictatorship which was increasingly bizarre and unhinged, withdrawing Gambia from the Commonwealth and declaring the country an "Islamic Republic". There was even a proposal to make him King of Gambia, and he was awarded the honour of Kentucky Colonel.
A completely unexpected outcome for Africa, unlike some other dictator who continues to grimly hang on to power while we hope for the "biological solution".
