In memory of HI&RH Archduke Otto, God rest his soul.

When asked if he would be watching an Austria - Hungary football match, the Archduke replied: "Perhaps – who are we playing?"

Of course, I do have a slight advantage over the rest of you. It helps in a pinch to be able to remind your bride that you gave up a throne for her.

During the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Morocco in 1980, after repeated delayed dinners and receptions had worn down the patience of the Queen.  King Hassan II decided to deflect some blame.  Pointing to the Queen's then Assistant Private Secretary Robert Fellowes (brother-in-law to the soon to be Princess of Wales), King Hassan snarled "That is the person who is responsible for this terrible muddle!"

The Queen crossly replied "I'll thank you not to speak about my staff like that!"

It should be out very shortly if it isn't out already.  It's being quoted and serialized by certain papers now...

On a walkabout during Diamond Jubilee festivities, the Duke of Edinburgh asked a pensioner who was wrapped in a foil blanket: "Are they going to put you in the oven next?"

Barbara Dubery, 89, had been given the foil wrap by council officials who were worried she would get cold as she waited in a wheelchair.

Her daughter Pam Shaw said: "It made her day."

I thought this would be a good time to revive this thread (one of my favorites).

The late Princess Alice Duchess of Gloucester used to relate that when she and the Duke soon after their wedding were first granted their grace and favor home in York House at St. James Palace, they were warned that the drawing room floor was in such a weakened stat that it could not bear the weight of more than twenty people...  "so we made a party list" recalled the Duchess many years later "of the twenty-one people we disliked most".

"It came wi' a lass, it'll end wi' a lass."
- King James V of Scotland, accurately predicting the fate of the House of Stuart- it began with a lass (Marjorie Bruce, eldest daughter of King Robert I, through whom her son Robert II claimed the throne and became the first Stuart king of Scotland) and it ended with a lass (Queen Anne, the last reigning Stuart monarch).

James was said to have uttered that sad prediction as he lay depressed upon his deathbed in 1542 following the Battle of Solway Moss, upon learning that his wife (Mary of Guise) had just given birth to a daughter. His two young sons by Mary of Guise had both died the previous year. James passed away himself the following week.

"Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide."

While this quote isn't exactly "funny", it is humorous due to it's author (of all people): John Adams. Next time someone shares something about how America's founding fathers intended it to be a democratic society, share this one with them.
