Menelik II of Ethiopia and his consort Empress Taitu held thier Armenian jeweler in great affection.  When he came down with a terrible illness, they asked the doctor of the Italian mission, Dr. Traversi in Addis Ababa to treat him.  This was during the tense negotiations that would eventually lead to the battle of Adwa.  The Doctor informed the Emperor that there was nothing he could do, and that his jeweler would be dead within a day or two.  The Imperial family was grief stricken, and Empress Taitu particularly grieved.  Then much to everyone's relief the jeweler recovered fully and was up and about within a week.  The special Italian envoy, Count Pietro Antonelli, and the Italian minister in Ethiopia, Count Salimbeni had an audience with the Empress and the following is a translation of their conversation.

Empress Taitu: Count Antonelli, your doctor caused us much distress.  He performed very poorly.

Count Antonelli: Your majesty, this medical case is extremely rare, and truly miraculous.  I can vouch for Dr. Traversi that he is among the best Italian Cavalry doctors we have.

Empress Taitu: A cavalry doctor...for the men or the horses?

Count Salimbeni who had no love for Dr. Traversi laughed outloud.

Empress Taitu (very frostily):  What is so funny Count Salimbeni.

Her majesty was not amused.

Amusing conversation related by Nancy Mitford Rodd to her sister Deborah Duchess of Devonshire in the early 1950's among two French aristocrats talking about a fellow Count.

"He's extremely left wing. He's an Orleanist!"

Charles I at his trial:

Quote:
"The King cannot be tried by any superior jurisdiction on Earth. If power without law can make law, I know not what subject in England can be sure of his life or anything he calls his own."

I may disagree with it on one point, but the latter part is especially ammusing.

A people and a Sovereign are clearly different things

And I like this one too, right before his death:

Quote:
I have a good Cause and I have a gracious God. I will say no more."

"The snow falls as easily on a cowpat as it does a rose petal."

Elizabeth Charolotte (aka "Lisolotte"), Duchesse d'Orleans, second wife of the  Duc, Phillipe de Bourbon, sister-in-law of Louis XIV, mother of the Regent, Phillipe Duc d'Orleans, by birth Princess and Countess of the Palatinate of the Rhine, Duchess of Bavaria and a prolific writer of letters, but known grandly by the title of "Madame".  Her earthy (often vulgar) sense of humor in her vast correspondence leave us the greatest record of life at the court of Louis XIV.  She was a granddaughter of James I of England (VI of Scotland), first cousin to the Electress Sophia of Hanover (mother of George I of Great Britain), paternal great-grandmother of Marie Antoinette, and ancestress to the current royal families of Spain, France, Italy, and Bulgaria. Did I get all of that right Peter?

Almost. She was a great-granddaughter of James I and VI and the Electress Sophia's niece, rather than first cousin. Reigning monarchs descended from her include that of Spain, as you say, along with those of Belgium, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Besides both claimants to France, or all three if you throw in the Bonapartes, both claimants to Italy and that to Bulgaria, the claimants to Austria, Romania, Serbia, Portugal and Brazil are all of her descent.

Parliamentary rule had, so the King declared, "given birth to hatred ... which has wounded and degraded the whole nation. The ambition and lust for glory in a few people has damaged the realm, and blood has been shed by both parties, and the result of this has been the suffering of the people. To establish their own power base, has been the rulers’ sole goal, often at the cost of other citizens, and always at the cost of the nation.."  -- HM King Gustav III

Funny how right he was, and how few notice it these days.....

Didn't she give up the 'highness' part of her name when she dumped the Prince of Wales?

And her birthing comment is purely speculative....

Now that, though not royal, is amusing.
